OCTA Minutes Meeting April 3, 2008
University of Mississippi student Zach Smith is the coordinator of the UM Tennis Club Team, and he attended the meeting to brainstorm ideas on how to increase involvement on campus. The members discussed the different types of activities that the OCTA uses to attract members such as Monday Night Social Tennis in the summer and small group leagues that are not affiliated with USTA. The next order of business was brought to the floor by President Joe Bishop. The OCTA has begun discussing and working with OHS and LHS tennis coaches to campaign for more Oxford community courts. The best decision would be to add on to John Leslie courts, which could be used by both teams and community members. To accomplish this, the OCTA is asking all members to take action and contact your alderman in order to discuss the court shortage situation. Sandra Irby at MTA contacted OCTA and made the organization aware of a $40- $50,000 grant to be awarded over 3 years. This grant could be used to pay for the expansion of John Leslie, Avent, etc. The OCTA Summer Tournament date was moved again. The date of the tournament is now set for June 13-15. This is the weekend of Father’s Day, and in honor of that the tournament will be given a new name. This tournament will only be for doubles play, and the fall tournament will be reserved for singles and mixed play. The OCTA voted and agreed to put in bids for hosting League Championships in 2009. We will fill out applications for Senior Mixed and Super Senior League Championships. There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.
