OCTA Minutes February 6, 2008 In the absence of David Heckel, president Joe Bishop reported on Winter League. Joe Bishop has made contact with the university, and they have come to an agreement on the use of the indoor Gillom Sports Facility courts on the Ole Miss campus. The courts can now be reserved for Monday nights by the Winter Mixed Doubles League. The courts will be available to all member of the OCTA in the future, but we are using the Winter League as a trial to work out details. Policies for indoor court use were discussed and will be adopted at the next meeting.
President Joe Bishop also arranged with the university on the use of the Mitchell-Saloum courts for our two annual tournaments. The summer tournament will be held on May 29, 30, and June 1. They will be held at Mitchell-Saloum, and John Leslie courts will be used for over-flow.
Treasurer Mike Roberts reported that the OCTA had received its annual check from MTA and Southern for $1500.00. This check is based on the number of registered USTA players in our area.
Member-At-Large Tommy Clemments announced the next Oxford USTA captin meeting to be held Saturday, February 9 th. The meeting will last from 9-12, and all captins should bring their $150.00 deposit and $40.00 court rental fee (to be paid to OPC for the use of John Leslie courts for league play). Schedules will be set for the season that begins Feb. 17 and runs until May 18.
In addition to the work he has done on the use of Gillom and Mitchell-Saloum Centers, President Joe Bishop has also been in contact with the university on the up-keep of their education courts and Turner Center courts. These will be cleaned with working nets and wind screens.
With those university courts available for use, OCTA will have 24 courts to use. This will make Oxford eligible for making bids on sanction play. The Fall Super Seniors tournament has already been set for 2008, but Oxford has been asked to place a bid for 2009.
Member-At-Large Tommy Clemments has spoken to our OPC representation Michael, and Michael has assured us that the light bulbs on the John Leslie courts are going to be replaced ASAP. Also, protective “crash pads” have been ordered for the light poles on the John Leslie courts. OCTA has been working on this for a very long time, and it is a great success that we have finally accomplished this goal!
Changes were discussed for the OCTA website. Website Chairman Caroline Fair gave an update of what is currently on the site. It was agreed that the website should contain a calendar with all scheduled OCTA league play and OPC scheduled events. This will give members a better idea of how many courts are available for play before they have to actually drive out to the courts. Work is also beginning on getting photos, maps, and driving directions to all court locations. This will be helpful for USTA league play as well as OCTA tournaments.
There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.
